.E-School.
Today's E-School is about spy
ware, what causes it and how to rid your system of it.
Spy ware: Spy ware is a program that stealthily collects information
about your computer and yourself then delivers it to the maker of the program.
In most cases you will find spy ware in file sharing programs such as Kazza,
Morpheus and many others. But how do you know if a program you use contains
spy ware? The best and only way to go about doing this is to get another
program to search your computer for spy ware. One of the most popular programs
to do this is called Ad-Aware. I store the program in my Start menu and
whenever I install something I run the program to see if I've been infected by
spies. The program scans my system and shows me a report. Then I can easily go
through and delete everything I don't want. It even includes a
backup-and-restore utility incase you've deleted something you feel is better
kept. Ad-aware is brought to us by Lavasoft.
The program is compatible with
Windows 98, 2000, NT, XP, and Me.
The basic version is still free,
but for $15 you can register for Ad-aware Plus, which includes an update
service called Ad-Watch and free lifetime product support.
How I did it:
1. I downloaded the Ad-Aware
program
2. I ran the aaw.exe(Ad-Aware
executable)
3. I followed the Step by Step
instructions and clicked next.
4. I ran the shortcut that the
program placed in my start menu and desktop.
5. I checked the "My
Computer" checkbox on the right of the Ad-Aware window.
6. I clicked "Scan Now"
7. I checked which Spy ware I
wanted out and clicked next.
Much of the other configurations
for the program are best left as they are unless you know exactly what your
doing. Again see the Manual for more information on running the program the
best it can run.
